Documentary Film “Lessons in Leadership”

Special trainings are held for village leaders in Ozurgeti and Chokhatauri districts (Guria region in west Georgia). The goal of the project is to support the development of local self-government, which implies active involvement of the local population in the work of the district’s municipal councils (sakrebulos). The project is implemented by the nongovernmental organization Civil Society Institute with financial assistance from the European Union. During the trainings village leaders are told that if they know their rights they can be more self-assured when dealing with municipalities.

The project is implemented in 8 municipalities of 4 regions of Georgia. The trainings took place in Kakheti, Shida Kartli, Guria and Adjara regions from March 1, 2009 and 151 leaders have already been trained.

Documentary film “Europe in Javakheti”

Javakheti – a farthermost region in the south of Georgia; Villages that are sometimes unreachable even for Jeeps and trucks and a Europe built in a Soviet-period farm; How the cheese is produced from the milk provided by Swedish cows and an European-style collective farm; How a remote and godforsaken village of Kartsakhi was turned into an international arterial highway passing through the alpine zone and connecting western and eastern economies; Utter poverty of the local residents and the rescue from Europe – you can see it all in the film.

European Union launched agriculture assistance program in three regions of Georgia 5 years ago. Javakheti was one of those regions. Projects worth 1.5 million Euros were implemented in Akhalkalaki district; they covered live-stock farming, apiculture, fishing and agriculture spheres. Food safety program is being elaborated in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia; it should encourage export of Georgian products abroad. The project was finished two years ago, but the cooperative farm in Kartsakhi village is still successfully functioning.

Documentary Film “A Different Childhood”

The film is about the monitoring conducted by the Office of Public Defender of Georgia in children’s homes. Experts and psychologists were able to conduct the detailed analysis of the situation in the children’s homes thanks to the financial assistance from the European Union. 1.4 million Euros will be spent on strengthening the Office of Public Defenders and correspondingly that amount will be used for protection of rights of children, prisoners, persons with mental conditions and handicapped individuals.

The monitoring results prepared by the Office of Public Defender include many violations: inadequate environment for children, incomplete medical services provided to them, one and the same type of food, lack of professionalism among the employees of children’s homes.

Public Defender demands that urgent steps be taken in order to remedy the conditions that are tantamount to inhuman treatment. Set of recommendations comprised of 27 paragraphs have already been sent to corresponding ministries.

Under this project European Union is also working on raising public awareness on rule of law and human rights issues together with the Office of Public Defender.
