Documentary Film “Green Route”

Broadcasted by Rustavi 2 on 07.02.2010

This film is about the projects funded by the European Union in two major Georgian towns – Batumi (Adjara region) and Kutaisi (Imereti region).
A special facility was created in Batumi to eliminate medical waste gathered in the Adjara region. This type of  waste was completely segregated from other types of waste.  Some 130 medical institutions working in the Adjara were requested to sort out their waste and pay a special tax for its elimination.

Kutaisi is the first town in Georgia where waste is sorted out and recycled. The European Union spent 200,000 Euros  improving waste management there. In the frame of  project colored waste bins were installed in the streets of Kutaisi – blue for plastic, yellow for paper, green for everyday waste. Waste sorted out in that way can be recycled – the first Georgian facility  processing plastic and polyethylene items is clear proof of that. The facility  also produces tiles, using secondary raw materials. The projects is funded by the EU and aims at protecting the environment and raising public awareness.
