Documentary Film “On the Verge of War and Peace”

Broadcasted by Rustavi 2 on 10.01.2010

This film is about the lives  of people who suffered in the aftermath of the August War between Russia and Georgia in 2008. The film tells about the assistance  they received from the European Union, in order to return to their homes.

These people have to live in a danger zone. The biggest guarantee of peace in the conflict zone is the European Union Monitoring Mission, which has been patrolling the border with the Tskhinvali region since the conflict.

Many residents of some 30 villages that were part of  the former buffer zone and whose houses were destroyed during and after the war  have moved and settled elsewhere. Those who stayed behind live in small cottages built with the financial assistance of the EU, as  their houses  are being restored.

Once a month each village receives a delivery of humanitarian aid. One of the biggest funders of this project is the EU–  some 23 thousand people receive aid in this form.

Besides  humanitarian aid the EU has elaborated a number of special programs aimed at supporting the population affected by the war. Special credit lines have been allocated, so that they can start small businesses; a professional re-training center is being built in Gori and water reservoirs of several villages have been repaired. Children are treated withe the help of a psychological and social rehabilitation process.

The European Union has allocated a total of 500 million Euros  to  mitigate the consequences of the war.
